I trained as an osteopath in UK, graduating in 1989 from the European School of Osteopathy in Maidstone. I worked in the UK in my own practice for 6 years in partnership with my wife Mandy, who graduated in 1990. Mandy is from Whanganui and we settled in Whanganui in 1993.
Since that time I have engaged in numerous post-graduate education courses, often focussed on movement education and rehabilitation. For fourteen years I ran a popular “Mindful Movement” class which combined the best of many systems, from Yoga to Pilates, Swiss Ball exercise and Feldenkrais, with the intention of improving day to day movements, strength, co-ordination and balance.
In 2018 I gained a Post-graduate Certificate in Health Science (endorsed in Musculoskeletal Management) from Otago University.
I have had a long term involvement in the disciplinary side of the the osteopathic profession, having served both as member and chair of the Preliminary Investigations Committee and Tribunal Panel of the New Zealand Register of Osteopaths and, from 2003, as a member and chair of the Professional Conduct Committee for the Osteopathic Council of New Zealand. For two years I worked as a Clinical Advisor to ACC in the management of complex claims. I have been an external examiner of final year osteopathy students and of osteopaths immigrating to Aotearoa/New Zealand. In March 2021 I was appointed to the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.
In clinical practice I enjoyed a broad range of interests, treating people of all ages and stages. My own physical ability has been compromised by the development of a slowly progressing degenerative muscle wasting disorder (Inclusion Body Myositis). I finally stopped seeing patients in February 2021, and have stepped down from my director’s role in the practice, but still work in a supervision and mentoring role.
Ngā mihi.
